50% of people believe UK energy bills are the most expensive in Europe

A recent YouGov report has found a troubling three in ten people spend over 10% or more of their household income on gas and electricity, with 27% of those having spent less on food and 5% borrowing from short term lenders in order to pay their bills.

Many people find it a struggle to work out what supplier and plan is best for them, with 69% of people are in favour of forcing energy suppliers to reduce the number of different tariffs they offer and simplify bills.

Whilst the majority believe the amount of tariffs should be reduced, 46% of people feel that greater competition should be enforced. Regulator Ofgem has recommended a full competition investigation into the “Big Six” providers (British Gas, EDF, E.ON, Npower, Scottish Power and SSE), due to “declining consumer confidence”.

Dissatisfaction with the industry is clearly evident, with only 9% of people believing that they are treated fairly by big suppliers, and 50% of people believing UK energy bills are the most expensive in Europe – though according to the Department of Energy and Climate Change, the UK is amongst the cheapest.
